Econ Challenge Winners 2018

Greetings Bonnie,

We wish to congratulate you and your students for the impressive display of economic knowledge. The following teams and students will be advancing to compete in the Southern California State Final of the National Economics Challenge on April 5, 2018.

YEAH TEAM --- since the competition was during Spring Break, we had to decline to represent ESHS this year. but great streak! ESHS's BIZ E Pathway has had a representative in either the Econ or Personal Financial Challenge Regionals every year for the past three years.

ESHS Educator Takes Brookly

ESHS Biz Pathway Educator, Bonnie Maye,  was selected by the Council for Economic Education (CEE) as a recipient of a scholarship to attend the annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in Brookly, NY during October 4-7th. This opportunity was made possible by funding from the CEE. 

Ms. Maye has been working for the past two years with the local California Council for Education developing the various beyond the classroom experiences for students. This summer Ms. Maye was invited to work with the Council for Economic Education to help develop a new program designed to help prepare students for the workplace. The trip to New York wars a chance for the parties involved to meet face-to-face to work on the curriculum which hopes to be piloted in various classrooms soon. 

"It's a great honor to be selected to represent El Segundo High School and the El Segundo Unified School District in my work with both the national and the local Council's activities, " explained Ms. Maye. "Being here allows me to continue to network with leaders in economic and financial literacy education,m as well as other educators while representing the incredible work that is being done at ESHS with our own Biz Pathway program."

"I cannot wait to share with my fellow educators many of the resources and exciting programs and strategies that this conference provides."

ESHS BIZ PATHWAY

Welcome to the blog for the ESHS Business Pathway.

We are the newest pathway on the block and are working on some exciting changes to the pathway. The first is the addition of Marcos Bolanos, the 2017 ESHS Teacher of the Year. Mr. Bolanos is a master teacher of economics and has an extensive background in education. Mr. Bolanos brings his incredibly love of economics and business to the pathway's growing program.

He is teaching the Business Entrepreneurship course this year while longtime Business Pathway Cooridinator, Bonnie Maye, is continuing the development of the Speech and Debate course, the newest addition to the pathway while teaching the Business Accounting course.

Mr. Bolanos and Ms. Maye are working together with new administrator, Dr. Jen Tedford, as well as the many supporters Ms. Maye has recruited over the years to help strengthen the pathway and to add some new wrinkles to the program.

This year, Biz Pathway students will be actively participating in many DECA activities as we get our newly established student chapter of this venerable organization up and running. We have a Student Based Enterprise that was set up by a few students on campus, Gundo Merchandising and our speech and debate students will be competing at regional and national competitions this year.

Biz Pathway students will be competing in the California Council for Economic Education's  (CCEE) Finanal Advisor Contest this fall. Student teams of four will take a test and then see how they do against students throughout the state. This year we have also opened the contest to students not able to participate directly in the Biz Pathway courses.

Spring contests include the Personal Financial Literacy and Economic Challenges and the ever challenge IG Economic Olympiad in April at Cal State Fullerton. Accounting students are experiencing real life via the HR Budget Challenge which gives students a job and has them paying and saving in real life scenarios. This was also opened up to all Eagles on campus.

DECA meets the first Wednesday of the Month. Our campaign based club, Do Something meets on the second Wednesday of the Month, and the Talking Eagles, our competition-based speech and debate club meets the third Wednesday of the Month so that our activities are open to all Eagles.
